Unboxing of Sony’s new Freeview device for the PS3. The device looks like a good deal overall, dual tuners, recording tv, etc. Only downside appears to be the implemented DRM.

Coder “Freeplay” has released some code and instructions on building Java apps that can run on the PS3 without using the the OtherOS feature, utilising the BD-J feature available of Blu Ray disks. In theory this means that you’ll be able to run Java stuff from DVD/CD/Flash memory. It would appear that the PS3 won’t allow any filesystem access (no surprises there), but from browsing the instructions it all looks fairly straightforward.
